Safe Handling & Storage: Preventing Unauthorized Access

A firearm you aren't actively using is still your responsibility. Where and how you store it matters.

Responsible firearm ownership doesn't end when you leave the range.

In many ways, the most important safety decisions happen at home.

A firearm that isn't properly secured can be accessed by children, visitors, unauthorized individuals, or someone experiencing a crisis.

Preventing that access is a fundamental responsibility of ownership.

Why Secure Storage Matters

Unsafe storage creates preventable risks, including unintentional injuries, theft, and unauthorized use.

The presence of a firearm in a household also creates responsibilities toward people who may not know it's there.

You cannot assume that everyone will recognize the danger or make appropriate decisions.

Physical security should be your first line of protection.

What Counts as Secure Storage?

Appropriate storage depends on the firearm, household, and applicable legal requirements.

Common options include:

Firearm safes: Secure enclosures designed to restrict access. Consider construction quality, anchoring, locking mechanisms, and manufacturer specifications.

Lockboxes: Smaller secure containers that may be appropriate for certain storage needs.

Cable and chamber locks: Devices that can provide additional protection when compatible with the firearm and used according to manufacturer instructions.

Locked storage rooms or cabinets: These may provide protection when properly constructed and secured, but not every ordinary cabinet or interior door provides adequate security.

No security device is perfect. Choose products appropriate to the risk and use them correctly.

Unloaded Storage and Ammunition Security

For general household storage, recognized safety guidance recommends keeping firearms unloaded, locked, and inaccessible to unauthorized individuals, with ammunition secured separately.

A mechanical lock is an additional precaution, not a substitute for a suitable storage enclosure.

Before storage, the firearm's condition should be verified using the manufacturer's procedures.

If you are unfamiliar with those procedures, obtain qualified instruction.

Never assume a firearm is unloaded because you remember putting it away that way.

Homes With Children

Children are naturally curious.

Education is valuable, but it cannot replace physical security.

Never rely on telling a child not to touch a firearm as the only safeguard.

Firearms and ammunition must remain inaccessible to children.

Consider visiting children as well as those who live in the home.

A storage arrangement that worked when you lived alone may need to change when your household changes.

Visitors and Other Adults

Unauthorized access isn't exclusively a concern involving children.

Roommates, guests, contractors, and other visitors may encounter improperly stored firearms.

A responsible storage plan considers who has access to the property and whether anyone else can access keys, combinations, or storage devices.

Don't share access credentials unnecessarily.

Firearms and Mental Health Crises

There may be circumstances when temporary separation from firearms is an important safety precaution.

If someone in the household is experiencing suicidal thoughts, severe distress, or another acute crisis, consider lawful temporary off-site storage through an appropriate trusted person, dealer, or other authorized service, where available.

Local laws differ regarding transfers and temporary storage.

Seek professional guidance and emergency assistance when there is an immediate danger.

Storage During Travel

Travel introduces additional legal and practical considerations.

Rules can vary depending on the jurisdiction, transportation method, and destination.

Airlines, for example, have specific procedures for transporting declared firearms in checked baggage.

Never assume that laws or transportation policies are identical across states or carriers.

Review current official requirements before traveling.

Inspect Your Storage Arrangement Regularly

Security needs change.

Periodically review whether:

  • Locks and storage devices function correctly

  • Keys and combinations remain secure

  • Unauthorized individuals could gain access

  • Ammunition is appropriately secured

  • Household circumstances have changed

  • Your storage practices meet current legal requirements

Don't wait for an incident to reveal a weakness.

The Forward Assist Perspective

Responsible ownership includes the moments when nobody is watching.

A properly secured firearm isn't a sign of fear or excessive caution.

It's evidence that you understand the responsibility involved.

If you choose to own it, you choose to secure it. Every time.

Be an asset. Not a liability.
