Pistol Training Drills

Six drills designed for stationary indoor shooting ranges, progressing from fundamental marksmanship to advanced performance assessment. All drills can be completed from a fixed firing lane without movement, holster draws, or tactical maneuvers.

Before starting, confirm your range permits the target types and exercises. Keep the muzzle pointed downrange, your finger off the trigger until ready to fire, and follow all range officer instructions.

BEGINNER • FUNDAMENTALS

01. The Precision Grouping Drill

Objective: Develop consistency in sight alignment, trigger control, and shot placement.

5 yards/10 rounds/Untimed

Use a standard paper bullseye target. Fire two separate five-shot groups, focusing on consistent fundamentals rather than speed. Compare the size and location of both groups.

Performance benchmark: Measure group diameter and record whether the second group is more consistent than the first. Improvement matters more than an arbitrary score.

02. The Five-Shot Consistency Drill

Objective: Build a repeatable shooting process without rushing.

5–7 yards/15 rounds/Untimed

Fire three five-shot strings at identical paper targets. Pause between strings to assess your posture, grip comfort, sight picture, and target results.

Performance benchmark: Compare all three groups for consistency. Record group size and point-of-impact changes.

INTERMEDIATE • CONSISTENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY

03. The Distance Progression Drill

Objective: Evaluate how marksmanship changes as target distance increases.

5 / 7 / 10 yards, 15 rounds/Untimed

Use three identical paper targets or replace the target between distances. Fire five rounds at each distance under the same controlled conditions.

Performance benchmark: Compare group size at each distance and identify where accuracy begins to deteriorate.

04. The Cold Versus Warm Assessment

Objective: Measure the difference between your initial performance and your performance after settling into a range session.

7 yards/20 rounds/Untimed

At the beginning of your session, fire a ten-round accuracy assessment. Later in the session, repeat the same assessment with an identical target and distance.

Performance benchmark: Record group size, point of impact, and perceived concentration during both assessments.

EXPERT / COMPETITION • PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

05. The Competition Accuracy Standard

Objective: Establish a measurable accuracy baseline using a standardized competition-style target.

10–15 yards/20 rounds/Scored

Use an approved bullseye or competition paper target. Complete four five-round strings, scoring each according to the target's printed scoring zones.

Performance benchmark: Calculate total points, percentage of maximum possible score, and consistency across all four strings. Use the same conditions during future assessments.

06. The Match-Day Baseline Test

Objective: Evaluate repeatability and concentration under formal scoring conditions.

15 yards/30 rounds/Scored

Use a recognized precision-pistol target approved by the range. Complete three ten-round accuracy assessments, recording each string independently. Keep the same target, distance, and scoring standard throughout.

Performance benchmark: Track total score, lowest-scoring string, and score variation. Repeat the test monthly to measure long-term progress.

Printing: Select Actual Size or 100% scale rather than Fit to Page. The expert targets use generic scoring rings rather than official competition-certified dimensions.

Forward Assist philosophy: Competence isn't measured by how impressive you look at the range. It's measured by safe, consistent, accountable performance. Track your results, identify weaknesses, and improve deliberately.
